What Affects Your Moving Cost
Several factors influence the final price:
- Move size: More items and a larger home = higher costs. The weight of your belongings is what movers charge on.
- Time of year: Summer is peak season in Charleston. If you move June through August, expect to pay 20–30% more than off-season rates.
- Professional vs. DIY: Hiring movers costs more upfront but saves you days of labor and stress. Renting a truck is cheaper but means you're doing the heavy lifting.
- Distance and route: A 200-mile move is considered short-haul, but rural or difficult-to-access pickup and drop-off points can raise costs.
- Add-ons: Specialty packing (crating fragile art), storage, or piano moving will increase the bill.

Important Logistics Before You Move
Don't skip these steps:
Licensing and documentation:
- Verify your moving company has a valid USDOT registration. Ask for their DOT number and double-check it on the official regulatory site.
- Ohio does not require a local moving license, but USDOT registration is non-negotiable.
Permits and parking:
- Check if your destination address requires parking permits for moving trucks. Some cities enforce these; others don't.
- HOA communities may have rules about access or elevator reservation—confirm before moving day.
- Ohio does not require a state moving permit, but verify local parking restrictions in your new neighborhood.
Insurance:
- Standard "Released Value Protection" covers only 60 cents per pound per item—almost useless for anything valuable.
- Ask your moving company about full-value protection or third-party coverage options.
- If you're moving high-value items (art, antiques, jewelry), consider purchasing additional coverage.
Change of address:
- Submit your USPS change of address form at least a week before your move date. Go to USPS.com to start.
- Notify your bank, insurance, employer, and subscription services of your new Ohio address.

FAQ
How long does the move take?
Expect one to two days for the actual move, depending on load size and distance. Summer peak season can add delays. Ask your moving company for an estimated delivery window before you book.
Can Charleston movers crate specialty items?
Yes—at least one Charleston mover offers custom crating for oversized, fragile, or oddly shaped items. Ask for specifics on crate design and whether they can tailor the build to your needs.
Do I need to ship my car separately?
If you're driving to Ohio yourself, no. If you want your car transported while you fly or travel separately, look into auto transport services. It's a different process than household moving and usually handled by specialized carriers.
Why are people leaving Charleston for Ohio?
Job market strength, lower taxes, and cost-of-living factors (despite Ohio being slightly pricier) draw people to Ohio. The lower unemployment rate is the big pull.
Can I pay in cash?
Four movers in Charleston accept cash, but it's the exception. Most carriers require a deposit via traceable payment (credit card, check, ACH transfer) to secure your date. You'll pay the rest at pickup or after delivery. Confirm exact payment timing and methods before booking.
