Estimates reflect seasonal and market pricing as of January 2026. Actual costs vary with load size, access, fuel, and move date. Get several quotes to validate pricing for your specific situation.
Full-Service Moving Costs
Hiring professional movers to handle the whole operation—packing, loading, transport, unloading—runs $813 to $3,177 for a studio, $1,544 to $4,709 for a 2–3 bedroom, and $2,113 to $6,153 for a 4-bedroom-plus move. You're paying for labor, expertise, and insurance. The wide ranges reflect seasonal demand (summer costs more) and how much heavy lifting and specialty packing you need.
Moving Container Costs
If you prefer to load your own portable storage container and have the company haul it to Massachusetts, expect $525–$1,258 for a small move, $933–$1,826 for mid-size, and $1,316–$2,199 for large. You get flexibility on packing timeline, but you're doing the heavy lifting yourself.
DIY Truck Rental Costs
Renting a truck is the cheapest route—$253–$417 for a studio, $270–$503 for 2–3 bedrooms, $302–$595 for 4+. But you pack, you drive, you unload. No crew. Fuel is included in these estimates, but factor in your time and physical effort.
What Affects Your Moving Cost
- Move size & complexity: More items = higher costs. Specialty items (pianos, hot tubs, safes) add labor and equipment fees.
- Time of year: June through September is peak season in Burlington. Winter moves are cheaper but harder to schedule.
- DIY vs. pro: Renting a truck saves money upfront; hiring movers saves your back and schedule.
- Distance & route: 221 miles is moderate; longer routes cost more. Highway congestion or rural delivery addresses can add time and expense.

Before You Move: Know the Rules
Massachusetts Licensing & Insurance
Moving companies in Massachusetts must be licensed by the Department of Public Utilities – Transportation Oversight Division. Verify your mover's license before you sign. They're required to carry cargo insurance and publicly file their tariffs. Don't skip this step.
Permits & Parking
Massachusetts doesn't require moving permits, but check local parking rules. Some cities restrict oversized vehicles, so confirm ahead of time if your moving truck needs a parking permit.
Change of Address
File your USPS change of address form at least a week before your move. Select your official move date to ensure mail forwarding starts on schedule.
Moving Insurance
Released Value Protection (RVP) is free but minimal—60 cents per pound per item. If you need full-value coverage, discuss third-party insurance options with your mover or an independent provider.
Building Access
If you're moving into an apartment or condo, reserve elevator time in advance. Some buildings require formal elevator reservation forms; don't assume first-come, first-served.
Moving Checklist
Stay organized with a comprehensive moving checklist that covers everything from utilities to mail forwarding. It keeps you on track without the stress.
